Women at Luzira Women Prison marked International Women’s Day with a powerful message of hope, resilience, and new beginnings, emphasizing the theme “Right, Justice, Action for All Women.”
During the visit, the women engaged in discussions aimed at encouraging unity and personal transformation. The gathering highlighted the importance of breaking barriers and building bridges, reminding participants that rights without action are meaningless.
Speakers encouraged the women to claim their dignity, protect their rights through counselling and support, and think beyond prison walls by investing in their future.
Throughout the session, the women shared moments of laughter and teamwork, reinforcing the spirit of unity in diversity. Participants also opened up about their personal journeys, sharing stories of struggle, healing, and hope.
One of the key reflections during the gathering was that freedom is not only about leaving the prison cell, but also about freedom from fear, shame, and hopelessness.
In a powerful symbolic step, the women expressed that they prefer to see themselves not only as inmates of Luzira Women Prison, but as “Ladies With a Purpose,” reflecting their commitment to transformation and rebuilding their lives.
The visit also highlighted an important humanitarian concern within the facility. Luzira Women Prison has a maternity ward for expectant mothers and women who give birth while in custody. However, the ward currently faces shortages of essential items needed to support both mothers and newborn babies during and after delivery.
Some of the items needed include baby clothes for children born in the facility, milk, basic baby care items, and essential supplies for mothers during and after labour. The women and prison staff therefore appealed to well-wishers, organizations, and members of the community to extend support to help improve the welfare of mothers and their babies.
The gathering ended with a strong message to women everywhere:
“Mothers, daughters, all women — wherever you stand, rise and embrace your role.”
Despite the challenges they face, the women affirmed one central truth:
Hope is not lost.
Through support, unity, and compassion from the wider community, their journey toward renewal and dignity can continue. 🌿
